Gas Blowback Rifle (GBBR)

A GBBR is a rifle-length gas blowback platform — typically an M4 or AK pattern — with a reciprocating bolt that recocks the hammer and holds open on empty.

Magazine-fed gas runs the same valve-and-blowback cycle as a GBB pistol, scaled up to a rifle-length receiver with a real charging handle, bolt catch and, on most designs, a last-round bolt hold-open. The recoil impulse and the visible bolt cycling are the draw: nothing else in airsoft replicates a real trigger reset and hammer fall this closely.

Consumption is the trade-off — a full magazine of gas may only fire 30–40 rounds before running dry, versus hundreds from an AEG battery — and cold weather drops chamber pressure enough to cause short-stroking. Most GBBR owners keep an AEG as a backup for cold-weather or all-day skirmish games.

Owners who play mostly cold-weather outdoor games often keep the GBBR as a range or CQB gun and switch to an AEG for all-day field skirmishes, rather than fighting gas performance in freezing temperatures.
