Ballistic / Cut-Resistant Plates
Also called: SAPI plates, plate inserts
Plates are the rigid inserts a plate carrier's pockets are built around — in airsoft almost always foam, EVA or plastic dummy plates chosen for realistic weight and shape, not real protection.
Real steel/kevlar or ceramic SAPI-cut plates are heavy, expensive and legally restricted in many places, so airsoft players fill their carrier's plate pockets with lightweight dummy inserts sized to the same shape — enough to give the carrier its correct silhouette and worn feel without carrying actual armour weight all day.
Some players deliberately choose heavier steel or ceramic dummy plates for fitness training or the most authentic possible loadout weight, but the large majority use foam or plastic, since a plate carrier's job on an airsoft field is fit and mounting points, not stopping anything.
Weight can be tuned deliberately: some players choose heavier steel dummies specifically as informal fitness training between games, while others go as light as possible purely to reduce fatigue over a long, active skirmish day.
