Minimum Engagement Distance (Legal Context)

While most engagement-distance rules are set by individual fields rather than national law, they exist to manage a real injury liability that operators and organisers do carry legal responsibility for.

There's no single DACH-wide statute fixing exact metres for a given power level the way the joule limits themselves are regulated — field-level MED policy fills that gap, and operators set it partly to satisfy their own liability insurance requirements as much as player comfort.

That means MED, unlike the 0.5-joule threshold, genuinely varies by field and should always be confirmed at check-in or the day's briefing rather than assumed from a previous site — treating a rule you've seen elsewhere as universal is a common and avoidable source of safety violations. This is general information, not legal advice — always confirm current requirements with your national authority and your field before you buy, carry or play.

A player moving between several fields regularly benefits from keeping a simple written note of each site's specific numbers, since relying on memory across multiple different policies is a realistic way to accidentally mix them up.
