Minimum Engagement Distance (MED)

MED is the closest range a field allows a shot to be taken at, tied to a gun's power level — the higher a gun's output, the further away it must fire from.

Because hit pain and injury risk scale with muzzle energy, fields set tiered MEDs: a low-power CQB-tuned gun might be cleared at effectively point-blank range, a standard rifle needs several metres, and a high-power DMR can require 20 metres or more before it's allowed to fire on someone.

Enforcement usually relies on player judgement backed by the bang rule for accidental close encounters, and on marshals watching for obvious violations. MED is one of the more field-specific rules — always confirmed at chrono or the day's safety briefing — since limits vary meaningfully between sites even for the same gun category.

Some players deliberately choose a lower-power secondary weapon specifically to legally engage at distances their primary can't, treating MED as a real tactical constraint to plan around rather than just a safety rule to remember.
