Reticle

The reticle is the aiming mark itself — a dot, crosshair, circle-dot or ranging pattern — projected or etched into an optic to indicate exactly where a shot will land.

Reticle design varies by intended use: a single fine dot suits fast, precise CQB aiming, a wider circle helps rapid target acquisition at the cost of precision, and ranging or bullet-drop reticles on magnified scopes add hash marks for holdover at different distances.

Adjustable reticle brightness matters as much as shape — too dim washes out in bright daylight, too bright blooms into a fuzzy blob that obscures precision at range — so most quality optics offer several brightness settings rather than a single fixed output.

Trying an optic in the actual lighting conditions it will be used in — bright midday sun, not just an indoor shop counter — is the only reliable way to judge whether a given reticle brightness range will actually be usable on game day.
