Laser Designator

Also called: aiming laser

A laser designator projects a visible aiming dot onto a target, letting a player aim from a retention or hip position without bringing the gun up to eye level.

Mounted alongside or combined with a weapon light on the same rail, the laser is co-witnessed with the gun's actual point of impact through zeroing, similar to a red dot but visible on the target itself rather than through an eyepiece — useful for quick point-shooting or shooting around partial cover.

In airsoft it's used almost entirely for visual effect and quick-aim convenience rather than the tactical low-light targeting role it plays with real firearms, since a BB's trajectory over any real distance diverges from a straight laser line more than a bullet's does — most players treat it as close-range and CQB-only.

Visibility to the naked eye also means visibility to an opponent — a laser dot dancing on a wall or a player's gear can give away a shooter's position just as easily as it helps them aim, which is worth weighing in a stealth-focused role.
