LiFe Battery

Also called: lithium iron phosphate

LiFe batteries trade a little of LiPo's energy density for a flatter discharge curve and much greater tolerance of abuse, without NiMH's bulk.

Lithium iron phosphate chemistry runs at a slightly lower nominal voltage than LiPo (3.2V per cell versus 3.7V) but holds that voltage more steadily across a discharge and is far more resistant to punctures, over-discharge and thermal runaway — the failure modes that make LiPo storage and handling strict.

That safety margin makes LiFe a common recommendation for players who want LiPo-like performance without babying the pack, though the lower per-cell voltage means a LiFe pack usually needs one more cell than an equivalent LiPo to hit the same nominal voltage a gearbox and MOSFET are set up for.

Some MOSFETs and control boards are calibrated for LiPo's nominal voltage curve specifically, so swapping chemistries on an electronically tuned gun is worth double-checking against the board's documentation rather than assuming any lithium pack is interchangeable.
