Winding (Bucking Pattern)

Winding refers to the shape and material pattern moulded into a bucking's inner surface, which affects how consistently it grips a BB at different hop settings.

Beyond a bucking's overall hardness, the internal ridge or channel pattern — often visible as a spiral or textured band inside the rubber — is engineered to maintain even contact pressure across a range of hop-up dial settings rather than only at one ideal point.

Different winding designs suit different priorities: some prioritise a smooth spin at low hop for long range, others a wide, forgiving sweet spot that's easier to dial in for a new player. It's a detail most casual shooters never think about, but it's a major reason two buckings with identical hardness ratings can feel noticeably different to shoot.

Because winding pattern is baked into the rubber at manufacture, a player who likes one bucking's feel but wants a different hardness usually has to search for the same winding design from the same maker rather than assuming any bucking of that hardness will feel similar.
