Hop-Up
Hop-up imparts backspin on each BB as it leaves the barrel, using the Magnus effect to counteract gravity and extend flat, accurate range well beyond what a spinless shot could reach.
A round BB fired with no spin drops in a simple ballistic arc, but a BB spinning backward generates lift as it moves through the air — the same aerodynamic principle behind a golf ball's dimples or a curveball's break — which flattens its trajectory and adds meaningful range.
The adjustment dial most guns have controls how hard the bucking's nub presses against the BB, and dialing it correctly for a given BB weight is the single most impactful accuracy tune a player does themselves without opening the gun. Too little spin drops the shot short; too much curves it upward and off target entirely.
A quick field test some players use: fire a shot flat and watch whether it rises slightly before falling — a small rise means the hop is dialed in well, while a shot that only ever drops usually means more spin is needed.
