Hit Rules
Hit rules define what counts as a valid hit and how it must be called — usually any BB contact with body or gear, called honestly on the honour system.
Most fields count any BB strike that's felt or heard, including hits on gear or a weapon, not just bare skin — the reasoning is that requiring visible marks or pain as proof encourages people to lie about borderline hits, so the standard defaults to "if you felt it, call it."
Because there's rarely a referee watching every player at once, hit-calling relies heavily on personal honesty, and a reputation for not calling hits — sometimes called "no-selling" — is one of the fastest ways to be unwelcome at a field. Some sites add specifics like ricochets not counting or a grace period after being hit before a call is required, but the core honour-system principle stays constant.
New players sometimes worry about being unfairly called out on a hit that only grazed gear, but the near-universal advice from experienced players is simple: call it anyway, since erring toward honesty costs far less than a reputation for not doing so.
