Eye Protection Rating

Also called: ANSI Z87.1, ballistic eyewear rating

Eye protection ratings (ANSI Z87.1, EN 166, MIL-PRF) certify that eyewear has been tested to stop high-speed impacts, and every field requires rated eyewear without exception.

Standards differ in exact test methods and impact speeds, but they all exist for the same reason: a BB at close range moves fast enough to cause permanent eye injury, and sunglasses or normal prescription lenses are not rated to stop that impact regardless of how sturdy they look.

Fields treat eye protection as the one truly non-negotiable safety item — unlike joule limits or engagement distance, which vary by site, eye pro requirements are close to universal and enforced strictly, with most marshals empowered to stop play immediately if protection slips or comes off.

A rating printed on the frame or lens itself, not just the packaging, is worth checking specifically, since packaging claims aren't always traceable back to the actual product once the box is long gone and only the eyewear remains.
