Marshal
A marshal is the on-field official who enforces safety rules, resolves disputes and can pull a player or gun from play — the closest thing skirmish and milsim have to a referee.
Marshals check chrono compliance, watch for safety violations like unsafe muzzle handling or eye protection slipping, and step in when players disagree about a hit call — their word is generally treated as final on the field, since the alternative is games grinding to a halt over disputes.
Beyond enforcement, marshals often run the day's safety briefing, explain scenario objectives, and manage respawn points or timing during a game. Being a marshal is usually a volunteer or field-staff role that experienced players grow into rather than a formal certification most sites require.
Volunteering to marshal for a day is a common way experienced players give back to a field, and it's often recommended as genuinely useful experience even for someone who has no long-term interest in doing it regularly.
