- 0.5 Joule Limit (WaffG)Germany's Weapons Act (WaffG) draws its key line for airsoft replicas at 0.5 joules of muzzle energy — the threshold between a loosely regulated "imitation firearm" and a fully regulated weapon.
- 18+ RuleBuying, owning or playing with airsoft equipment is restricted to adults in Germany, Austria and Switzerland — there is no accompanied-minor exception most fields will accept.
A
- AEG (Automatic Electric Gun)An AEG drives a piston with an electric motor and gearbox to compress air behind each BB, making it the most common replica platform on the field.
- AEP (Automatic Electric Pistol)An AEP packs a miniature gearbox and motor into a pistol frame, giving battery-powered, gas-free operation at the cost of noticeably heavier weight.
- Air SealAir seal is how completely a gun's internals keep compressed air from escaping anywhere except behind the BB — the biggest lever on consistency and range.
- Airsoft Law AustriaAustria classifies airsoft under its federal Weapons Act with a broadly similar energy-based structure to Germany, but with regional (Bundesland) variation in how site permissions and enforcement actually run.
- Airsoft Law GermanyGerman airsoft law sits inside the Weapons Act (WaffG) and turns on a small number of linked concepts: the 0.5-joule threshold, the F-mark, the imitation-firearm category, enclosed-site play and adult-only access.
- Airsoft Law SwitzerlandSwitzerland regulates airsoft under its general Weapons Act, with a notably higher energy threshold than Germany before stricter acquisition rules apply, and a generally more permissive private-ownership climate.
- Anscheinswaffe (Imitation Firearm)Anscheinswaffe is the German legal category for objects that look like real firearms without being one — the classification most low-power airsoft replicas fall into, with its own set of carry and appearance rules.
B
- Balance ChargerA balance charger monitors and charges each cell in a multi-cell pack individually, keeping them at equal voltage instead of only charging the pack as a whole.
- Ballistic / Cut-Resistant PlatesPlates are the rigid inserts a plate carrier's pockets are built around — in airsoft almost always foam, EVA or plastic dummy plates chosen for realistic weight and shape, not real protection.
- Bang RuleA bang rule lets a player eliminate someone spotted at extreme close range by shouting "bang" instead of physically shooting them, avoiding a point-blank hit that would sting badly.
- Battle BeltA battle belt carries a player's most reach-critical gear — sidearm, primary reload, medical kit — at the hip, independent of whatever's worn on the torso.
- BB ConsistencyConsistency describes how uniform a batch of BBs is in diameter, weight and roundness — the quality factor that separates budget ammo from precision-grade.
- BB WeightBB weight, given in grams (0.20g, 0.25g, 0.28g and up), is the single biggest variable in how a shot actually performs downrange.
- Biodegradable BBBiodegradable BBs are made from a resin blend that breaks down under soil and moisture over time, and most outdoor fields now require them exclusively.
- BipodA bipod folds down from the handguard or barrel to give a stable, ground- or rest-supported firing position, mainly used on DMR and support-gun builds.
- Blind FireBlind fire is shooting around a corner or over cover without looking down the sights — often banned or restricted since the shooter can't verify a safe, legitimate target.
- BlowbackBlowback is the reciprocating motion of a slide or bolt driven by gas or electric pressure, simulating the recoil cycle of a real firearm.
- Bolt ActionBolt action describes the manual up-rotate-and-pull cycling motion used on nearly every spring-powered sniper replica, mirroring real precision rifles.
- Bucking (Hop-up Rubber)The bucking is the rubber sleeve inside the hop-up unit that contacts the BB and, via a raised nub, imparts the backspin that extends its flight.
C
- C-RatingC-rating states how fast a battery can safely discharge relative to its capacity — the number that actually predicts whether a pack can feed a hungry motor.
- Camo PatternCamo pattern is the printed uniform design chosen for a loadout, and matching it to the field's terrain matters as much for team cohesion as for actually blending in.
- Cantilever MountA cantilever mount offsets a scope forward of its rail clamp, giving proper eye relief on a carbine-length rail without pushing the shooter's head into an awkward position.
- Chest RigA chest rig is a harness of pouches worn over the torso without plate pockets, prioritising light weight and mobility over the protection profile of a plate carrier.
- Chrono (Chronograph Check)Chrono is the pre-game check where a gun's muzzle velocity is measured against the field's limit, using the site's own chronograph and reference BBs.
- CO2 CartridgeA CO2 cartridge is a small disposable steel canister, usually 12 grams, pierced inside a magazine to power a shot count that's roughly fixed regardless of temperature.
- CO2 PowerCO2 uses disposable pressurised cartridges instead of a refillable magazine reservoir, giving hard-hitting, weather-stable power at the cost of a running consumable cost.
- Combat BootsCombat boots give ankle support and a durable, aggressive sole for the running, crouching and uneven terrain a skirmish or MilSim game involves.
- Comms / PTTA PTT (push-to-talk) unit lets a player key a radio without pulling it out, usually via a button on a chest strap wired to a headset — critical for team coordination without breaking cover.
- CQB (Close Quarters Battle)CQB describes close-range, indoor-style combat through rooms and corridors, where engagement distances often drop under 10 metres and reaction speed matters most.
- CylinderThe cylinder is the tube the piston travels through to compress air, and its port position and volume must be matched to barrel length for efficient airflow.
D
- Dead RagA dead rag is a brightly coloured piece of cloth a hit player displays — worn on the head, waved, or draped over the gun — to signal "I'm out" to everyone nearby.
- Deans / T-Plug ConnectorDeans and T-plug are two common high-current battery connectors that replaced the older Tamiya plug as AEGs moved to higher-discharge LiPo packs.
- DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle)A DMR is a semi-auto-only rifle built for range over rate of fire, running near the field's upper energy limit with a longer, tighter barrel.
- Drop-Leg PanelA drop-leg panel hangs a holster, magazine pouch or dump pouch from a thigh strap below the belt line, keeping it clear of a plate carrier's bottom edge.
- DTD (Dead Til Deployed)DTD means a hit player stays fully out of the scenario until a scripted redeployment point — no respawn at all until the mission structure brings them back in.
E
- Effective RangeEffective range is the practical distance a gun can reliably hit a person-sized target, which is usually far shorter than its maximum FPS alone would suggest.
- Eye Protection RatingEye protection ratings (ANSI Z87.1, EN 166, MIL-PRF) certify that eyewear has been tested to stop high-speed impacts, and every field requires rated eyewear without exception.
F
- F in a Pentagon (F im Fünfeck)The F-in-a-pentagon stamp certifies a replica at or under 0.5 joules for legal sale and public carry by adults in Germany — without it, the same low-power gun loses that legal status.
- FIBUA / MOUTFIBUA (or the US MOUT) names both the real military doctrine of fighting through urban terrain and, in airsoft, purpose-built town-like sites that recreate it at scale.
- Fill NippleThe fill nipple is the small valve on a gas magazine that a bottle's nozzle presses onto to transfer gas, with a spring-loaded seal that closes the moment it's released.
- Fire SelectorThe fire selector is the lever that switches an AEG between safe, semi-auto and full-auto, mirroring the control layout of the real firearm it copies.
- Flat HopA flat hop replaces the bucking's single raised nub with a wider, flatter contact patch, spreading pressure across more of the BB for a straighter, more forgiving spin.
- FPS (Feet Per Second)FPS measures a BB's muzzle velocity in feet per second — the unit most fields chrono against, even outside the US and UK.
G
- Gas Blowback (GBB)A GBB fires by releasing pressurised gas from an onboard magazine, and on most models the same gas also cycles a reciprocating slide or bolt.
- Gas Blowback Rifle (GBBR)A GBBR is a rifle-length gas blowback platform — typically an M4 or AK pattern — with a reciprocating bolt that recocks the hammer and holds open on empty.
- Gas Mask (Airsoft Use)A gas mask worn in airsoft is almost always a non-filtering costume or fashion piece for looks, not real CBRN protection — and it still has to meet the field's eye protection rating underneath.
- GearboxThe gearbox is the sealed metal shell housing an AEG's motor-driven gear train, piston and spring — the mechanical heart the whole platform is built around.
- Gearbox V2The V2 is the most common AEG gearbox shell, found in M4/M16-pattern rifles and the platform most upgrade parts are designed around first.
- Gearbox V3The V3 shell is built for AK-pattern rifles, with the motor mounted lower and further forward than a V2 to match the AK's grip angle.
- Green GasGreen gas is propane blended with a small amount of silicone lubricant, the standard refill gas for GBB pistols and rifles in warm weather.
H
- Helmet Cut (High-Cut / Mid-Cut / Full-Cut)Helmet cut describes how much ear and jaw coverage a helmet's shell leaves open, a trade-off between headset compatibility and coverage that mirrors real tactical helmet design.
- Hi-Cap MagazineA hi-cap magazine holds several hundred BBs and uses a geared winder to feed them, trading realism for far fewer reloads during a firefight.
- Hit RulesHit rules define what counts as a valid hit and how it must be called — usually any BB contact with body or gear, called honestly on the honour system.
- Holographic SightA holo sight projects a laser-generated holographic reticle onto a window rather than reflecting an LED dot, giving a more complex reticle and better off-axis viewing.
- Hop-UpHop-up imparts backspin on each BB as it leaves the barrel, using the Magnus effect to counteract gravity and extend flat, accurate range well beyond what a spinless shot could reach.
- Hop-Up ArmThe hop-up arm is the small lever or nub that presses down on the bucking, and how evenly it applies pressure across the BB's width shapes spin quality directly.
- HPA (High Pressure Air)HPA replaces a gearbox spring or gas expansion with compressed air from an external tank, fed through a regulator and fired by a solenoid valve.
- HPA TankAn HPA tank is a refillable compressed-air cylinder — typically the same carbon-fibre or aluminium tanks paintball uses — worn on the body and hosed to the gun's regulator.
- Hydration CarrierA hydration carrier holds a water bladder and its drinking tube, mounted on the back of a plate carrier or as a standalone pack, keeping water accessible without stopping to dig through a bag.
I
- Import / Customs DeclarationOrdering a replica from outside the EU means it passes through customs as a regulated import, potentially requiring documentation, inspection or a marking check before it's released.
- Inner BarrelThe inner barrel is the precision tube the BB actually travels through, and its bore diameter and finish do more for accuracy than almost any other part.
- Iron SightsIron sights are the purely mechanical front-and-rear sighting system every replica ships with by default, and the fallback most players keep folded under an optic.
J
- Joule (Muzzle Energy)Joule expresses a shot's actual kinetic energy, combining BB weight and velocity into the one number most European fields and laws actually regulate.
- Joule CreepJoule creep is when a gun's actual energy output rises above its measured baseline as BB weight increases, catching out anyone who chronos light and plays heavy.
L
- Laser DesignatorA laser designator projects a visible aiming dot onto a target, letting a player aim from a retention or hip position without bringing the gun up to eye level.
- LiFe BatteryLiFe batteries trade a little of LiPo's energy density for a flatter discharge curve and much greater tolerance of abuse, without NiMH's bulk.
- LiPo BatteryLiPo packs deliver high, stable current at low weight, making them the standard choice for AEGs that need consistent motor torque under load.
- LMG (Light Support Gun)An LMG replica fills the belt-fed or drum-fed support role: a heavier AEG built for sustained full-auto fire rather than precision.
- Low-Cap MagazineA low-cap magazine matches the real firearm's actual round count — often 20–30 for a rifle — the strictest, least forgiving capacity option available.
M
- MagnifierA magnifier is a fixed-power lens mounted behind a red dot or holo sight, flipped to the side for close range and swung in line for extended reach.
- mAh (Battery Capacity)mAh rates how much charge a battery holds, which translates roughly into how many shots or how long it lasts before needing a recharge.
- Mandatory Eye ProtectionRated eye protection is required at essentially every field in the DACH region without exception, enforced as a condition of both safety policy and insurance coverage, not a house-style suggestion.
- MarshalA marshal is the on-field official who enforces safety rules, resolves disputes and can pull a player or gun from play — the closest thing skirmish and milsim have to a referee.
- Medic RuleA medic rule lets a hit player be revived on the spot by a teammate acting as medic, rather than respawning or sitting out, adding a support role to the game.
- Mesh vs. LensMesh and solid-lens face protection both stop BBs, but trade fog resistance, field of view and airflow against each other in opposite directions.
- Mid-Cap MagazineA mid-cap magazine feeds BBs with an internal spring rather than a wind-up mechanism, holding a realistic capacity — typically 100–200 rounds — without rattling.
- MilSimMilSim events run long-form, mission-driven scenarios over hours or days, emphasising realism in gear, comms discipline and tactics over quick respawn action.
- Minimum Engagement Distance (Legal Context)While most engagement-distance rules are set by individual fields rather than national law, they exist to manage a real injury liability that operators and organisers do carry legal responsibility for.
- Minimum Engagement Distance (MED)MED is the closest range a field allows a shot to be taken at, tied to a gun's power level — the higher a gun's output, the further away it must fire from.
- MOLLEMOLLE is the modular attachment system that lets pouches, holsters and panels mount, remove and rearrange on a carrier, rig or belt without stitching.
- MOSFETA MOSFET switches the motor's full current through a solid-state transistor instead of the trigger contacts, protecting them and enabling programmable firing modes.
- MotorThe motor is the electric drive that spins the gear train, and its torque and speed characteristics shape rate of fire as much as any mechanical part.
N
- NiMH BatteryNiMH batteries are the older, heavier, more forgiving chemistry that most AEGs shipped with by default before LiPo became the aftermarket standard.
- Non-Blowback (NBB)An NBB pistol fires gas straight down the barrel without cycling a slide, trading felt recoil for a simpler, more gas-efficient action.
O
- Objective-Based GameAn objective-based game scores or ends around specific in-game tasks — capture a point, escort a VIP, plant a device — rather than simply eliminating the other team.
- Offset MountAn offset mount angles a secondary red dot 45 degrees off the top rail, giving fast close-range aiming by tilting the gun without abandoning a magnified primary sight.
- Open Field vs. Enclosed SiteGerman law requires airsoft play with any gun above the lightest energy class to happen on enclosed, private ground not visible or accessible from public land — an open forest or public park doesn't qualify.
- Output PressureOutput pressure is the working pressure delivered to a solenoid or valve after regulation — the number that most directly sets an HPA gun's FPS.
P
- PALS WebbingPALS is the actual gridded webbing pattern — rows of stitched-down straps at fixed spacing — that MOLLE pouches attach to, and the two terms are often used interchangeably.
- Picatinny RailPicatinny is the standardised rail profile with evenly spaced cross-slots that nearly every optic, light and grip mount is built to clamp onto directly.
- PistonThe piston is the toothed rod the gear train pulls back and the spring drives forward, converting spring tension into the pressure that fires the BB.
- Plate CarrierA plate carrier is a vest built around front and back pockets for rigid plates, with [MOLLE](/glossary/molle) webbing outside to mount pouches and other gear.
- Pre-CockingPre-cocking is a control setting, mostly on HPA and some mechanical setups, that primes part of the firing cycle in advance to cut the delay between trigger pull and shot.
- Propane / Red GasStraight propane, without green gas's silicone lubricant, delivers noticeably higher pressure and is sometimes decanted from camping-fuel canisters, though it skips the seal-conditioning oil.
R
- R-HopAn R-Hop bonds a thin strip of material to the top of the inner barrel itself, extending consistent spin contact well beyond what a bucking's nub alone provides.
- Rate of Fire (RoF)Rate of fire is how many shots per second a gun cycles in full-auto, set by motor speed, spring weight and gearbox gear ratio together.
- Red Dot SightA red dot projects a single illuminated point onto a lens for fast, both-eyes-open aiming at close to medium range, without magnification.
- Reenactment / Larp ExceptionHistorical reenactment and larp sometimes use separate or overlapping equipment rules from sport airsoft, but the exception is narrower than it's often assumed to be and doesn't cover ordinary skirmish gear.
- RegulatorA regulator steps a tank's high fill pressure down to a fixed, much lower working pressure that the gun's solenoid valve actually fires from.
- RespawnRespawn is returning to play after being hit, typically by walking back to a designated point — the mechanic that keeps skirmish games fast-paced rather than one-life eliminations.
- ReticleThe reticle is the aiming mark itself — a dot, crosshair, circle-dot or ranging pattern — projected or etched into an optic to indicate exactly where a shot will land.
- RIS / M-LOK / KeyModRIS, M-LOK and KeyMod are the three main handguard attachment standards, differing in how accessories mount and how much extra bulk that mounting adds.
- Riser MountA riser mount raises an optic above the rail to align its sight line with the shooter's natural eye height, matching whatever height the gun's stock or cheek weld sets.
S
- Safety BriefingThe safety briefing is the mandatory pre-game rundown of a field's rules — hit calling, MED, boundaries, out-of-bounds areas — that every player attends before setting foot on the field.
- ShimmingShimming is adjusting thin metal washers on each gear's axle to set precise gear mesh — too tight binds and wears fast, too loose skips and strips teeth.
- Site Joule LimitsBeyond the national legal ceiling, individual fields set their own — often lower — joule limits per gun category, tuned to their site's layout and the kind of play they run.
- Site Liability InsuranceA properly run field carries liability insurance covering injury on-site, and many of the rules players find strict — MED, mandatory eye pro, briefings — exist partly because the insurer requires them.
- Skirmish (Skirm)Skirmish is casual, pick-up-style airsoft — open games with loose objectives, quick respawns and no long-form scenario, run most Saturdays at commercial fields.
- Sling (Weapon Sling)A sling carries a gun's weight across the body between engagements, freeing both hands for climbing, communicating or handling gear without setting the weapon down.
- Spawn CampingSpawn camping is holding a position right next to the enemy respawn point to eliminate players the moment they re-enter play, widely seen as unsporting and banned at most fields.
- SpeedloaderA speedloader is a hand-cranked or tube-fed device that pours a large batch of BBs into a magazine quickly, replacing slow single-BB loading by hand.
- SpeedsoftSpeedsoft is a fast, low-gear format inspired by speedball paintball — minimal loadouts, arena-style courses, and an emphasis on movement and reaction time over realism.
- Spring Rating (M-Number)A spring is rated with an M-number (M90, M100, M120…) indicating its relative power, which is the single biggest factor in an AEG's muzzle energy.
- Spring-PoweredA spring-powered replica cocks its piston spring by hand — usually by racking a bolt handle — and fires one shot per cycle with no battery or gas.
- Suppressor (Mock)An airsoft "suppressor" is almost always a solid, non-functional tube that threads onto the muzzle purely for looks, sometimes doubling as a tracer unit housing.
T
- Tactical GlovesTactical gloves protect knuckles and palms during falls, crawls and rough terrain while keeping enough dexterity to operate a trigger, selector and mag release.
- Tamiya ConnectorThe Tamiya connector is the older, boxier two-pin plug most AEGs shipped with by default, now considered a bottleneck on higher-draw upgraded builds.
- Tappet PlateThe tappet plate is a small piece pushed by the piston to feed a fresh BB into the chamber and briefly seal the nozzle against the barrel each cycle.
- Tightbore BarrelA tightbore barrel has a smaller inner diameter than a stock barrel, reducing the air gap around the BB for tighter groupings and more consistent hop-up spin.
- Tracer BBTracer BBs glow in flight when charged by UV light beforehand, fired through a matching tracer unit that positions them at the muzzle for a visible trail — mostly a low-light and night-game feature.
- Tracer UnitA tracer unit mounts at the muzzle, often disguised as a suppressor, with a small UV LED ring that charges tracer BBs the instant they pass through on the way out.
- Transport Rule (Sealed & Cased)Getting a replica to and from a field means carrying it unloaded, out of sight and not ready for immediate use — usually in a closed case or bag rather than slung visibly.
- Trigger ResponseTrigger response is the delay between pulling the trigger and the shot firing — a factor of contact quality, wiring and motor spin-up that speedsoft players especially chase.
W
- Weapon LightA weapon light mounts to a handguard rail to illuminate dark rooms or night games, usually with a pressure pad switch routed to the support hand for instant on/off.
- Weapons Possession Card (WBK)A WBK is the German firearms-possession licence that becomes relevant if a replica's energy pushes it out of the lightly regulated Anscheinswaffe category and into full weapons-law territory.
- Winding (Bucking Pattern)Winding refers to the shape and material pattern moulded into a bucking's inner surface, which affects how consistently it grips a BB at different hop settings.
